Black-Out Curtains - a Cure for Sleep Deprivation
A major health concern facing all modem societies is sleep deprivation. It is estimated that 33% of the population suffer from lack of sleep for one reason or another.
The causes of sleep deprivation are numerous but a major factor is too much light in a room where people are trying to sleep. This light can be man-made or it can be natural during long daylight hours or sleeping at abnormal times.
In the United States it is estimated that:
- More than 90 million people suffer from lack of sleep.
- There are 25 million shift workers, many of whom have difficulty sleeping during the day.
- Nearly 250,000 motor accidents are caused by lack of sleep.
- 40,000 fatal heart attacks a year are caused by sleep apnoea.
It is an undisputed fact that very many industrial and commercial accidents and errors are caused by lack of sleep. Estimates of the cost of this sleep deprivation World-wide runs to hundreds of billions of US Dollars.
These are disturbing facts and you and your customers can do their bit to reduce these figures by using three-pass black-out curtains or curtain linings. Daylight in a room is not the only reason people do not sleep well, but it is a major contributor.
Here is a little personal anecdote from Richard Yates - Joint Managing Director of Textile Bonding Ltd and in charge of the Coating Division:
"When Richard and Joylyn Yates added a new bedroom onto their house they moved in before new curtains were ready. For the first two nights there was just calico over the windows and they were woken by daylight before 6-OOam which is not good when you are on holiday! Then Richard hung some Thermo Suede black-out lining up and they both slept through until 7-45am - nearly two hours extra sleep" If you want to know more then send Richard an email or give him a call or Skype him at richard.yates4
